Q. My glucose tolerance test was at 105 - how high/low is that compared to acceptable levels?

A. Hello Millie,

Be sure to talk with your doctor about your results and what they indicate.  You doctor will have your test results and be able to answer questions specific to you.

The American Diabetes Association states the following:

"In order to determine whether or not a patient has pre-diabetes or diabetes, health care providers conduct a Fasting Plasma Glucose Test (FPG) or an Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT).  Either test can be used to diagnose pre-diabetes or diabetes.  The American Diabetes Association recommends the FPG because it is easier, faster, and less expensive to perform.

With the FPG test, a fasting blood glucose level between 100 and 125 mg/dl signals pre-diabetes.  A person with a fasting blood glucose level of 126 mg/dl or higher has diabetes.

In the OGTT test, a person's blood glucose level is measured after a fast and two hours after drinking a glucose-rich beverage.  If the two-hour blood glucose level is between 140 and 199 mg/dl, the person tested has pre-diabetes.  If the two-hour blood glucose level is at 200 mg/dl or higher, the person tested has diabetes."

Q. My wife noticed that none of your recipies use olive oil.  She says she always understood this was the best oil for cooking and salads.  Advice?

A. Hello Dave,

Both olive oil and canola oil contain similar amounts of monounsaturated fats (heart healthier fats).  You could use olive oil instead of canola oil if you like.  You will want to be sure to adhere to portion sizes.

We do occasionally use olive oil, but more commonly use canola oil.

Q. Well it was some pretty shaky news yesterday, the doctor told me that my blood tests show that if I do not change my ways I will be diabetic no later than next year, 2 years at the very most.  I guess the only good news is my cholesterol is low and my LDL and HDL are in the right limits.

I gave up smoking in 1982 and just started throwing food in mouth instead.  But it has been the last few years that I have been fighting depression and weight gain, so I've really got myself into a mess now.  So, if you think your plan can help, it's not if I don't know that what I eat is not good for me. A lot of it is I am tired after working all day at the computer and the stress of my job sometimes is overwhelming.

If you can help me buy the right things and tell me what I need to pack in my lunch at work. I get up at 4 a.m. and start work at 6 a.m. lunch is 11 a.m. and then I go home and or do other things and am in bed by 8 and that's 5 days a week.  What do you suggest?

A. Hello Dorothy,

It certainly sounds like you are motivated!

Pre-diabetes is unique in that weight loss, following a healthy diet to support weight loss, and regular physical exercise can help to delay onset of type 2 diabetes (National Diabetes Prevention Program).

Q. I am 29 weeks pregnant and at my last doctor's visit, I had sugar spilling into my urine.  I go for the glucose test on tuesday of next week.  I am looking to find a reasonable diet that will benefit both my child and me. I am not sure what foods are considered healthy.  My doctor said that I should steer away from fruits and juices, which has been primarily my diet. Seeking Advise,
Ashley

A. Hello Ashley,

Ask your doctor to refer you to a Registered Dietitian to help you with a meal plan.  A Registered Dietitian in your area can help you to plan a healthy meal plan.

GlucoMenu is not intended for those who are pregnant or lactating.

Good luck to you!

Q. I do have a question and can't seem to find an explanation or answer I understand, can you explain "food exchange"  I recently started cooking for a diabetic as a side job, I did meet with his nutritionist, but it was before I started looking at diabetic recipes.  Thank-you.

A. Hello Joy,

I believe you are referring to the American Diabetes Association's Exchange List.  You can get a copy of it by going to their web site:

http://Diabetes.org

The cost is approximately $2.50
